FORWARDS (“The Pack”)
No.1 & No.3
Loose-Head & Tight-Head Prop Props are great partners in the Pack. I believe their main job is to scrummage in the scrum & support getting the ball in the line-out. They also play a vital role in hitting those rucks and mauls.
Type of person: Generally the heaviest & strongest players.
No.2 - Hooker
No doubt scrumming here is the Hookers key role as well as ball possession from the line-out. In open play, he can really be seen as a loose forward. Type of person: Athletic, medium build & “on the ball.”
No.4 & No.5 - Second Row
My position (otherwise know as the “lock”). Basically he has to secure tight locks and push like a power house in the scrum. Both players play the key role in win line-out balls as well as gaining balls from restarts.
Type of person: Very tall, athletic (jumpers) & good strength.
No.6 & No. 7 - Blind-Side & Open-Side Flanker
This chap`s task is mainly a defensive one on the blind-side especially in eliminating any slack from the opposing No.8 or scrum half. Good flankers are sharp, fast & excellent tacklers. He is also important in cleaning up messy balls coming out of rucks and loose play.
Type of person: Fairly heavy but speed & power more important.
No.8 - Number Eight
The No. 8 essentially controls the movement of the ball in the scrum feeding the scrum half. Like loose forwards, he is also a significant player for tackling & in providing the backs with support in the breaks.
Type of person: Tall, versatile & very athletic!
No.9 - Scrum Half
His job, essentially, is to deliver the ball from the back of the scrum, ruck or maul in order to “feed” the backs. The Scrum Half is the link between the backs/forwards & really is in the middle of the action.
Type of person: Small build but fast & alert with excellent handling skills.
No.10 - Fly-Half
The Fly Half is often the tactical planner in the team taking decisions & calling the moves. He is often seen as the leader of the backs instructing them how to defend or attack. Usually, he is also a skilful kicker.
Type of person: Mid build, athletic & quick thinker.
Type of person: Mainly speed & pace!
No.12 & No.13 - Inside- & Outside Centre
The role of both “Centres” is really to break through the opposing defending line. Accurate passing is vital to succeed (on the attack) and there tackling is particularly important to regain possession. The Inside Centre often shares the kicking & distribution of the ball with the Fly Half.
Type of person: Versatile player with speed & agility.
Type of person: Accurate, attacking skills & pace.
