Rugby`s full name is Rugby Football as it was the distinct type of football played at the Public School, located in the English town of Rugby, in the 1850s from where the game originated. In fact it was William Webb Ellis in 1823 who “with a fine disregard for the rules of football as played in his time first took the ball in his arms and ran with it thus originating the distinctive feature of the rugby game.” Once one sport, today there are two versions of the game; Rugby League and Rugby Union. The differing cultures between the north and posh southern public schools caused the split in 1895. Having played Rugby Union for many years at college and at university, I will attempt to introduce you to some of the main concepts of the game.
